Come on in – the water’s lovely

The luxury of a swimming pool in the back garden continues to appeal to many UK buyers. Less appealing is the fad for unusual pool linings, such as copper-lined or black-tiled pools – seen everywhere from the Cotswolds and Berkshire, to St George’s Hill in Weybridge in Surrey. Despite their growing ubiquity, they are not attractive and really don’t appeal to everyone.

Stepping into a pool with black tiles is a little like stepping into an oily pit. Thankfully, blue will always be prevalent. You simply can’t beat a deep blue turquoise when it comes to a beautiful pool. Developers certainly think so; I’ve viewed many new developments recently with traditional blue pool linings.

Pools are definitely becoming less gimmicky. Shapes have changed as we’ve moved away from the weird and not-so-wonderful kidney shape back to the traditional rectangular pool with semi-circular steps leading into it. Indoor pools are back in favour and one also sees more long, narrow lap pools, where serious swimmers can do their lengths.

Our American and European clients marvel at the way the English persist in having outdoor swimming pools when we (mostly) don’t have the climate for them. They are mildly amused at our optimism when it comes to convertible cars, alfresco eating and outdoor swimming pools. One American client really doesn’t get it and lets her dogs swim in the pool of the house she bought as she wouldn’t dream of swimming in it herself.

Some of the higher-end houses – we are talking £10m-plus – take practicality to a new level as the swimming pool base is hydraulic and can move up and down, creating a party room when not in use. Some even have glass floors so you can see the water while dancing above it, although perhaps this is not for the faint-hearted.
