Fishing for property
15 October 2015
Hampshire has much to offer but perhaps some of its most enchanting features are the chalk streams that run through many parts of the county. Much of the attraction is the crystal clear water, made so by the natural filtering system of the chalk. Enticing to the eye, the chalk streams are home to a range of endangered species such as water voles and otters, and provide a unique contribution to global ecology.
A magnet for fishermen, the Itchen and the Test are two of the world’s greatest chalk streams and lead many to look for a property in the area. It is almost impossible to choose one river over the other but almost more difficult is finding a property that has fishing at the bottom of the garden, and particularly one with a meaningful stretch of river.
With so many beats tied up in estates, the ultimate prize rarely comes on to the market. Knowing the marketplace is key, second only to patience as it can take many years to reap the rewards. But fortunately for fishermen, patience is one thing that they have in abundance.
