London’s hidden gems: Telegraph Hill
23 February 2018

It is an area that few of our clients will have heard of, but sitting on a hilltop between Peckham and New Cross lies a pocket of London that offers outstanding views, a beautiful park and gardens that go on forever. Telegraph Hill’s wide streets offer a welcome break from the majority of London’s dense and overlooked residential enclaves.

The Telegraph Hill conservation area was built in 1871 by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, developed to satisfy the demands of the aspirational middle classes. The name itself dates back to 1795 when there was a semaphore located on the site, used to transfer messages between the Admiralty and its fleet during the Napoleonic wars. If you look at the area on a map you can see the wider-than-average gaps between roads, allowing for large gardens and privacy, which are so hard to find in London. The views from the top of the hill are outstanding, with some of the best cityscape views in London, whether looking northeast towards Canary Wharf, northwest towards the City, the Shard and on towards Westminster. Very few parts of London offer such an interrupted vista.

The area is conveniently situated between four overground rail stations - Brockley and New Cross Gate (taking you directly into London Bridge), Nunhead and Queens Road Peckham. It has easy access to Greenwich and everything that it has to offer, from the beautiful architecture, village atmosphere and the extensive Greenwich Park. There is no doubt that the area was meticulously planned and at circa £550 per square foot, your hard-earned money will go a great deal further than in many, better-known parts of London.
