Timing your move to the country
9 March 2018

When is the right time to move out of London for the country? It’s a question I get asked all the time and the short answer is: it is always the right time.

As I have detailed in previous posts 'My House Move: Selling into our new home in the country' and 'Put schools at the top of your property search', I moved from London to Hampshire when my children were six and three. My daughter was about to go into Year 2, which is an interesting time to move because pretty much all of the other mums have been at the school since Reception. Friendships are well established, not only among the children but also the parents. It meant going to every coffee morning that I possibly could, and actively encouraging my husband to go on curry nights with men he’d never met before.

Since our move, our son has started at nursery, which has been a much easier integration. I am really excited that he will be starting in Reception next year, because this time we will be there right from the beginning, and I am even considering putting my hand up to be Class Rep. As I have been the lone newbie before, I can encourage other mums who find themselves in a similar situation.

There is never a right time to move out of London but it is about making sure you move to the right area. That means an area with the right parents and mum groups, as well as tennis clubs, or whatever else your interest happens to be. This is where a buying agent can prove useful – it’s not just about finding the right property, we also know the area inside out so can advise on all other aspects of life in the community.

Ideally, everyone would like to be in situ in their new home by September, ready for the Michaelmas term. But the important thing is to choose the right school – and all schools are different – which is where we can help as well. So while people are now revving up for that September start date, the reality is that choosing the right school – whether you join halfway through the academic year or at the beginning – is more important than anything else.
