Why garages will never go out of fashion
23 January 2018

Although few people actually park a car in one, most houses still have a garage. With modern cars getting bigger and bigger, while most garages were built years ago of a certain and modest size, there is a strong chance you would no longer be able to fit your motor into the garage even if you wanted to.

Parking your car in a garage overnight can result in cheaper insurance premiums but better anti-theft devices mean you don’t really need to keep your car in a locked room. Paintwork is also better quality so doesn’t need the weather protection that a garage could provide. While owners of valuable classic cars undoubtedly need somewhere to house them, they tend to opt for purpose-built accommodation with high security rather than the average garage.

However, modern-day living does not mean the garage is redundant – far from it. Most people buying a house expect a garage but not for the car – there are more pressing uses such as home gyms, storage for bikes and lawnmowers, hobby rooms, a den for the kids, somewhere to put the freezer or even to convert to a home office. Unlike a shed, the garage is often attached to the house, which gives a greater sense of security, and more convenient as you may be able to access it directly from the house without having to go outside. This makes creating extra living space for the home, such as a utility room, a viable option. With more people working from home, converting a garage to a home office is also now extremely popular - planning permission permitting.

With so many options available, it is likely that buyers will be expecting to see a garage on the floor plan for the foreseeable future.
