Homes for dog lovers
Britain’s love affair with dogs never fails to astound.
I have a miniature wire-haired dachshund, admittedly not a proper ‘full sized’ dog, but nevertheless very much part of the family, so can understand some of this obsession. And with Crufts starting this week, we are about to be dazzled by a broad spectrum of canines in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
The family dog is more often than not top of the wish list when embarking upon that well-trodden path from London to the country. What is slightly more surprising is how the pending pooch without realising, and never having met its potential new family, is already influencing their decision making when it comes to choosing the family home. I have one client who is looking not only to relocate her life halfway across the globe, but also those of her eight rescue dogs. Such a request is a challenge for the buying agent as there are many more factors to consider than in your average property search.
The wish list is likely to include the usual large open plan kitchen/breakfast room, master bedroom with en suite and dressing room and far reaching views. But do not underestimate the practical requirements of the average four-legged friend. A sizeable utility/boot room is a must for most dog owners; a large garden - ideally without neighbours too near by in case of barking - outside/inside dog shower’ kennels (ideally heated); dog-proof fencing; good footpaths; a lack of livestock grazing nearby; and of course under-floor heating for those lazy weekends post walk. Phew.
